Frequently Asked Questions – Powell Painting

Interiors

How should we prepare for your arrival?

Two ways. First by removing artwork from walls and clothes from closets to be painted. Then, by ensuring the area is wiped clean of hair, fur and dust bunnies.

We’ll handle the rest, like moving furniture and window treatments. All of your furniture and room items will be carefully covered and floor surfaces will be expertly protected. If you prefer to move any mantle and coffee table items, that’s helpful but not necessary. When we’re done, everything will be moved back to its original place.

Do we need to stay home while you are painting?

Nope. We can make arrangements ahead of time to accommodate your schedule. Our employees are hand selected by Tanja, bonded, insured and screened with criminal background checks, so you can feel comfortable and trust that your home is in good hands.

How is our home protected before and during painting?

Our prep is meticulous. That means total surface protection, furniture & floor coverings, and our workers take care. You’ll never find dirt tracked into your home or smudges on the walls.

We have cracks in our walls. Do we need to repair them before the painters arrive?

Nope. We’ll handle minor drywall and plaster repairs, including fixing any nicks, holes, blemishes or marks found on surfaces that will be painted. Holes are filled and sanded; cracks are thoroughly scraped out, filled and sanded; water stains or marks are sealed before painting; and built up dirt or grease is cleaned.

We also check the caulking around all windows and frames, crown molding, chair rails, etc. and recaulk as necessary with our elastomeric caulking to ensure minimal shrinkage through seasonal weather change. Told you we’re a one stop shop.

When should we expect to repaint the interior of our home?

There are several things to consider when wondering if it’s time to repaint. Oftentimes, the quality of the paint used when the walls were originally painted will determine that timeframe. If the area gets a lot of traffic, it will naturally wear faster. Other factors like smoking, fireplaces, and young children in the home play a role. A quality paint job by a professional crew should last anywhere from six to 10 years.

What kind and colour of paint should we use?

Paint isn’t one-size-fits-all. We can suggest a paint match that’s best suited for each surface and we can help with colour selection (thereby avoiding paralysis by analysis).

How should we prepare for your arrival?

It’s best if landscaping around your home is trimmed back and items are moved away so we can have clear access. The morning of pressure washing, ensure all windows and doors are tightly shut; we suggest allowing us access inside to check for any water leakage.

When should we expect to repaint the exterior of our home?

We live in a rainforest with four seasons; our homes must be protected from the elements. Moisture can cause paint to rapidly degrade, but a quality paint job done by a professional crew should last anywhere from four to seven years.

How do you prepare our home for painting?

We pressure wash the siding to remove any mildew and loose paint, then prepare for scraping, feather sanding, spot priming, and filling. For exterior caulking, our standard product used is Big Stretch® – a highly durable high-performance caulk. After caulking is cured, priming is complete, and all the prep is done, we begin painting.

How is our home protected during painting?

Drop cloths are placed underneath all areas being painted, walkways are covered, patio furniture removed, and shrubbery protected. We also use specific primers to protect the preparation of each individual surface.
