Frequently Asked Questions – Powell Painting

Interiors

What do we need to do to prepare for your arrival?

There is actually very little preparation required on your part. We request that you remove any breakables and art from any walls to be painted, and to clear any closets that are to be painted. We will come and handle everything else, from moving the furniture to window treatments. All of your furniture and room items will be carefully covered and all floor surfaces will be properly protected. If you wish, moving any mantle and coffee table items off of those surfaces would be helpful. When we are done, everything will be put back into their original positions.

Do we need to stay at home while you are painting?

No. We can make arrangements ahead of time that fit with your busy schedule; our employees are hand picked by Tanja, bonded, insured and screened with criminal background checks, so you can feel confident that your home is in good hands.

How is our home protected before and during painting?

Before we even open a paint can, we ensure that everything in your home is protected. This includes papering the floors and adding plastic over the furniture and substrates, removing faceplates, and taking a trouble light to each surface to be painted to find and fix any nicks, holes, or blemishes.

We have cracks in our walls. Do we need to repair them before the painters arrive?

No. We do minor drywall and plaster repairs, including fixing any nicks, holes, blemishes, etc. found on any surfaces that will be painted. Holes are filled and sanded; cracks are thoroughly scraped out, filled and sanded; water stains or marks are sealed before painting; and built up dirt or grease is cleaned. We also check the caulking around all windows and frames, crown molding, chair rails, etc. and recaulk as necessary with our elastomeric caulking to ensure minimal shrinkage through seasonal weather change.

What is the recommended time span before one should expect to re-paint the interior of their home?

There are several things to consider when wondering if it’s time to re-paint or not. Often the quality of the paint used when the walls were originally painted will determine how long it lasts. If the area gets a lot of traffic, it will naturally wear down quicker as well. Other factors are smoking, fireplaces, and whether there are young children in the home. In saying that, a quality paint job done by a professional crew should last anywhere from six to 10 years.

What kind and colour of paint should we use?

Choosing which paint to use for a home can be extremely difficult. We would be happy to help you weigh your options and provide any information you may need about the types of paints available, what colours would look best in your home, what brand best fits your budget, and more. Exteriors

What do we need to do to prepare for your arrival?

We request that all landscaping around the home is trimmed back to give us clear access to the home surface, and that all items are moved away from the home. The morning of pressure washing, make sure all windows and doors are shut tightly; we do suggest allowing us access inside your home to check for any water leakage.

Do we need to be at home when you come to paint?

Not at all; our employees are bonded, insured and screened with criminal background checks but we do ask that you leave a key with us, especially on the day we power wash the siding to ensure no leakage occured.

What is the recommended time span before one should expect to re-paint the exterior of their home?

There are several things to consider when wondering if it’s time to re-paint or not. Often the quality of the paint used when the house was originally painted will determine how long it lasts. Moisture can also cause the paint to degrade more quickly. Other factors include air conditioners (which cause paint peeling and window sills to rot), climate, and natural wear and tear. In saying that, a quality paint job done by a professional crew should last anywhere from four to seven years.

How do you prepare our home for painting?

First, we pressure wash the siding to remove any mildew and loose paint and to prepare it for scraping, feather sanding, spot priming, and filling. For exterior caulking, our standard product used is Big Stretch® – a highly durable high-performance caulk. After caulking is cured, priming is complete, and all the prep is done we move on to painting.

How is our home protected during painting?

We place drop cloths underneath all areas being painted, and cover any walkways, patio furniture, and shrubbery. We also use specific primers to protect the preparation of each individual surface.
